Do I need to keep my payslips?

I've spent my adulthood working for myself, meaning I haven't had payslips so to speak.

I've been in a new job for the past 9 months and not given it much thought but is there anything I need to know about my payslip?

If I notice an error when/how do I report it, how long do I have to note an error?
Should I keep them? If yes, how long for?

Any information will be very well received.:A

Sorry if that seems like a silly question but I can't seem to find much information on it online.

I would keep the payslips for at least the whole tax year until you are issued your end of year P60. I would probably still keep week 52/ month 12 payslip.

Any errors in your pay should be raised with the payroll department of your employer as soon as possible. The quicker they know about a problem then the sooner it will be rectified. Issues with your tax code would need to be addressed to HMRC.

I still have all of mine going back 15 years, to when I returned to employment after contracting for many years, they don't take up much room. It's highly unlikely I'll ever need one but if I do and I don't have it then it's game over.

You should keep all of your p60s until passed retirement age. If you can't keep all of your payslips for that long then keep one a year (perhaps scan them and keep on your computer). They are a good record of your employers, dates of employment, earnings, pension schemes, allowances earnt, deductions, NI payments to state pension qualification, etc.

This may not be relevant to the OP, but if you have a student loan, keep all your payslips ... DS2 has discovered from his most recent SL statement that the money deducted by his previous employer hasn't been recorded on his statement, so needs to send copies of all his payslips for the last tax year to get this rectified.
