Another link to ways of financing care for those who prefer not to to be at the mercy of the local council when they are old and infirm.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Really localhero, you should know better than to tout for business like that.

    It's strictly against the rules.

  • I'm sorry I didn't realise that providing useful information was against the rules.

This is off topic I know, but why should it be strictly against the rules to direct to your own website if it might be of use? I think that is one downside of the MSE forum area.
I would far prefer it if people could do it in an open way( in the signature maybe?)without fear of being accused of touting for business. It up to the individual to make a decision what to do with the information they read. There are other forums that do allow it.

Completely OT yes :) - but I think think the OP's had more (contrary) advice than she might have wanted, so we're probably OK :) And recyling makes sense: we can use this 2nd-hand empty space rather than creating new space.

But I more or less agree with you. Apparently it's banned in the sig (and I think that's a good idea since the link won't be relevant in every post the poster makes) but I have no problem with a relevant link to a site in which the poster has an interest provided that interest is declared in the same post/font/size/prominence etc.

Such a ban is idiocy anyway: all you need is a 2nd user-name and pop into the thread and recommend your 'own' site through a different ID. Or a PM which most folks read, I imagine. I did.

A lot of us post links to sites we've used, like, hate, think are great, think are scams, are scams etc etc. The only link explicitly banned seems to be any one we might actually have a responsibility for! Now that's irony! :)

As you can see from the top, the site is "free of ads" and you are not allowed to post links for personal gain. Thus you must expect to be treated as a spammer by other posters if you do this.

Take it up with Martin if you don't like it - it's his site and he sets the policy.

Fair point: an ad is an ad, a posted link by an uninvolved party is a reference not an ad. Fine line to walk, I suppose .....

Thanks to sloughflint, Egamar and others for your thoughts.

In my rather belated defence, the link that I provided was in response to a request for further information (at #31).

I also stated clearly that I had an interest in the link and that it was for information and not commercial gain.

The poster at (#32) clearly found the link of interest - and because I was upfront about it, the link was removed.

The sad irony is that a money saving site would prefer that married couples are unable to learn how they can quite legitimately safeguard the proceeds of a lifetime's work from long term care fees - something that is of genuine concern to a great deal of people.

No EI, I won't bother as I don't feel as strongly as you do about the matter. Whilst I don't like being dictated to ( I have no website to promote), you are quite right. It is his site and his rules go. Sorry again for the OT aspect,OP, but I'll respond to you EI and finish there.

I still don't see your point of view but thanks for emphasising what the rules are which I had already understood. You see,my view is that for every post you notice, there will be a few obvious adverts from people with low post counts ( why do they bother? And more to the point why are they still there?) and probably many more from savvy people who bide their time and clock up a reasonable post count before doing their advertising.
I know which type of poster I would prefer to come across. After post 32, LH quickly made it clear that it was their website before you made your post. It's gone now. And we are restricting the scope for finding potentially useful websites. I had never heard of that one.
I completely agree with post 37.
Oh well, each to their own opinions. No more from me.

It is not that I feel particularly strongly about it: but the issue has led to a very large amount of aggravation and dissent on the site in the past, particularly on the Mortgage board.

To the point that a code of conduct had to be drawn up.

I think we've all got better things to do than to go through the whole palaver again,so I've pointed out the rules that have already been laid down after a truly massive amount of discussion by dozens of people over several months.
