Help needed to rescue piece of furniture marked badly on top

My goodness, juliebunny, you must have a long way to retirement if you've never used fablon! I used it a great deal in the 60s and 70s!
It does wear a bit over time, but is easy and cheap to replace, so really useful for things like this. I'd use it for the cheap & cheerful look, or fabric + glass for something a bit classier.
A word of caution - I wonder if the mark is mould? Only a small amount of damp can cause mould, then if left awhile, it can do a lot of damage. If so, endure that you dry it out thoroughly before doing any covering.
