I have given longer than necessary notice to an employer before. In that situation I was on one week notice, but I knew if I only gave them that it would leave them in a difficult situation. I liked my team, and my boss, and I didn't want to give them a headache.

I say - if they are decent and reasonable, then be the same to them.

For those advising that I should hold tight and only give the required 2 weeks notice when I originally planned, how should I approach the situation if my boss asks if I can give in my notice earlier than I want?

Remind them you've worked there 2 years as you state. It may be the magic caveat who knows, but you also have to remember that, if you were the Employer, would you want someone around longer then necessary who by considering leaving to the actual handing in of their notice, is pretty much saying they don't want to be around, no matter how much it is laced up.

A job doesn't owe you anything except for the physical hours worked and the prescribed notice period when it's your choice to leave.

I spoke to an employer recently regards leaving who simply asked that I didn't return unless it was to be committed for the next X months otherwise they wanted to re-advertise straight away - I could have been the lesser person and said oh yes, got to payday and then run off with cleared pay in mucking them around royally but I took their feelings on the matter into consideration. (sadly they thought I'd forget about payday
completely at one point to boot but that's a whole different matter and no greatly real length of service spent with this employer)

The problem you've got with wanting to give them extra long time in notice is they could stitch you up knowing you want out. ...Your mind wasn't on the job etc... That's why you need to be careful more then ever in these times. A job doesn't work to suit you as I'd been told myself before on this very forum.

The repeat of the reassurance (which had already been positive going by first post) you seek can only come from your employer.
