My bankruptcy is effecting my wife's credit rating

I was declared bankrupt shortly before I married my wife. She has never had any defaults, missed any payments etc but the bank has said they get the following message as she is considering paying off a loan and taking out a smaller one for a car with lower interest rates and repayments "Do not apply for a loan adverse date with credit agencies"

Would this be because she is linked to me and is there any way of changing this as none of the debts etc were hers.

Thanks

If you have nothing at all in joint names then she can apply to put a notice of disassociation on her files with credit reference agencies, to make clear that you and she are not financially linked.

As a first step, it would be sensible for her to get copies of her credit record from the 3 main agencies, to check whether there is anything showing on her records which might be affecting her.

If you have any accounts in joint names, even if that specific account is in credit, then I believe you will be treated as linked and your record may affect hers.

  • What do her credit files say? That is your first step.

If your credit files are connected you will see how - likely a joint product. Do you have any financial products in joint names (mortgage, mobile phones, utilities etc)?
  • Thanks both.

The only thing that we are both on would be car insurance and as that's paid monthly would that be why we are linked? I will have a look on the 3 agencies and see what is on there. Do I need to do anything with my credit report now that I am discharged?

    Hi,

See the DebtCamel article linked below:

There is also a thread on MSE about post-bankrupt credit reference file cleanup (there will be lots of useful tips on there):

  • If you are paying your car insurance monthly then this is a credit product. The company lends you the payment at the start of the policy and then you repay it each month. However, if it's just one persons policy and the other being a named driver I would have thought this wasn't deemed as a joint product. What do your credit files show?
