Rugby to London via West Midlands Trains

I am planning an overnight trip to London from Leicester. In true moneysaving style I refuse to pay what East Midlands Trains charge and am planning to drive to Rugby, park overnight and travel to and from there via West Midlands Trains which will save me about £40. However West Midlands Trains don't do seat reservations and I am wondering if the trains get full (I have an arthritic knee and really need a seat). I am fairly flexible about times but would ideally like to leave Rugby about 9ish on 29th November and return from London about 7ish the day after purely to have as much time as possible there. Any other tips are very welcome - believe the train tickets go on sale this week and so I want to be ready!

Why does your title say Rugby to Birmingham..if you are planning to travel to London?
  • Apologies - I spent so long trying to look for tickets that were affordable from Leicester to London that I got confused. Birmingham to London is another option that is a possibility but that is Virgin Trains and I can reserve a seat with them. I've changed the title!

Have you considered Birmingham International - London with Virgin? Parking at the station is probably as expensive as city centre parking for New Street or Coventry, but I believe Lea Hall station (2 stops) has free parking (although not many spaces) and Marston Green (1 stop) is quite cheap with more spaces. It's doubtful if there will be much security at either but I leave my car at a station on the other side of the city, sometimes for several days, and have never had a problem.
