NHS Pension

My wife receives a small NHS pension. The quick question is - is the sum paid into her bank before or after tax ?

Many thanks

Andy

It will be "after tax" but the statements from the provider, or on line personal tax account, will show what tax basis is being used on those payments.

Occupational pensions are (potentially) subject to tax, and the pension payer will have a tax code for your wife. If she earns/receives less than the personal allowance during the tax year, it is likely to be the standard code and she won't have any tax deducted for that reason.

The scheme will be able to confirm the tax code they have for her (will also show on any payslips she receives from them), or she could look at her personal tax account with HMRC.
  • Thanks.

My wife is self employed and earns about £7000 per year plus £484/month from the NHS pension. (no state pension yet)

We are filling in a tax return and it asks for total of other pensions (not state) before tax taken off. The bank statement line has NHS Tax0000000.00 paid in £484.14

Does this look like a gross payment?
  • It does to me. Mine shows the tax paid on the bank statement line.
  • What's happened to her P60?

Looks to me like she isn't paying any tax because her personal allowance has been applied to her NHS pension?

NHS annual pension of £5809.68 plus salary of £7K = £12,809.68, so she has tax to pay on the excess (assuming her tax code relates to the standard personal allowance of £11,850) of £959.68. That will all come out in the wash/tax return.
  • Many thanks everyone for the advice.

We will use the £484 as a gross figure n the form.

On the tax return it asks for both the gross amount and the amount of tax deducted.

The tax deducted "looks" as if this will be zero. The P60 will tell you.
  • So she received exactly one month's payment during the whole of the 2017:18 tax year?
