Swimming

I have the opportunity to get a reduced price assess to my local swimming pool. Now I haven’t been swimming in public pool for a while. I last swam on holiday but that was a private villa.

I wore a tankini and was wondering are these ok to wear in swimming pool in public. I’m a large lady so I hope it doesn’t flop up and show my stomach while swimming.

Does anyone wear these at all

Thank you

  • Of course, you can wear what you want.

If your worried about it though, if it feels insecure (to you, not that it is necessarily) go and get a one piece.

I have had that sensation in the past, when the elastic has gone, or they get slightly big when I lose weight. I don't enjoy myself if there is a constant anxiety that something will pop out!

I wear a tankini because I can't find a longer length swimming costume at a reasonable price.

ETA - you could always stick a t-short over the top if you wanted to be a bit more covered up.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Errrrrrrr..... no you can’t wear what you want. Most pools specify what is and isnt allowed.

No idea what a tankini is so best to ask the pool you wish to use OP.
  • Apparently I need to be more specific...

I mean you can wear what form of swimwear you want.
This would include for women a one piece, a bikini, and a tankini (which is a vest top and separate bottoms, so covers more than a bikini)

All of these would be perfectly acceptable in any public pool, many will also allow rash vests and shorts as well.

The main point is that if you are asking this question it implies you don't feel that happy and secure in it, which means you won't want to go. Much better to get one you feel comfortable in and make use of it.

The reason that pools have swimwear rules is purely for safety.

Hence one pools says this “It is important that swimwear is relatively tight fitting so as to minimise the effect of drag that water logged clothing can create” “Cut down jeans, 3/4 Pants, underwear, T-Shirts and football shorts are not allowed.”

Baggy clothing is likely to get you drowned. Obviously political correctness not withstanding.

Have a look at your swimming pool's policy. Ours changed theirs when they did research that found many parents avoided swimming out of embarrassment, so now we're allowed to wear things like lycra leggings and close-fitting t-shirts (https://s3-eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/prod-everyoneactive-wp/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/31104318/SwimWearPolicy.pdf). The swim teachers ALL wear t-shirts in the pool (I think they must be poly fabric - they're loose but don't seem to hold onto the water).

I wear a 'boy leg' swimming costume, which is shaped like shorts on the bottom half. That's how I feel comfortable (and it stops the very attractive swimming costume wedgie!), but if you're happy in your tankini I think you'll be fine. Nobody will be looking at you under the water. Bikinis are allowed at my local pool and there are always plenty of love handles on display, not to mention bum crack from men who don't seem to be able to work a draw string. Nobody cares!

I’m actually going to buy a boy leg costume as tankini was annoying me last night. Constantly pulling it up at the shorts or having to tuck it in to stop my belly being shown off.

They seem very popular at the moment. So popular, in fact, that last time we went swimming I counted three other women in the same one as me... there were only about 10 women there!
