Pads for mechanical brakes

I've bought a second hand bike so I checked the brake pads and they have a lip on the top of the pads and they are glazed over so if I replace them what brand should I buy and what material will be best.

  • V/ Cantis? Clarks dual compound are what I use, and offer good value for money, and stopping in wet/ dry conditions.

Ebay and Amazon, look out for deals on multiple pairs. Be sure to check if you need threaded or straight posts, refer to what you already have on the bike.

I use Clarks sintered pads for my disc brakes.

Given the number of fake goods on sale by both these American owned online purveyors , for something as vital as brake pads I would buy only from reputable suppliers such as Wiggle, Evans or Planet X.
If the goods on sale are much cheaper than those shops its because they are counterfeit

The type of brake would be a help. Rim brakes or discs? They are completely different in design and operation. And not forgetting hub brakes or even coaster brakes. All completely different.

The more precise your request, the better people will be able to help.

The use of the term 'lip' makes me think that the OP is talking about conventional rim brakes that use brake blocks?
OP, if the block is lipped, then it's misaligned: the block is not contacting the rim right across it's width, so the wear is uneven.
However, they also refer to them as 'glazed', which then makes me think that they are cable-operated disc brake pads? More info needed.

Depending on the age of the bike and components fitted, it may be that this attitude is wrong, the genuine parts are on eBay but not in the large stores.

For example, according to their website search results, neither Wiggle nor Evans have heard of Fibrax or Weinmann.

I bought some Fibrax blocks for my Weinmann brakes on eBay, after even the local shop didn't have the same pattern.

What bike is this on? Wiggle hasn't heard of Dawes either.

They are cable operated disc brakes. I've read some pads are noisy and some wear down quickly but I'm not worried about how quick they wear down as long as they are quiet. I will need a pad that's good at stopping down hills as my road is pretty steep.
This is the type of pads I have but they don't have any maker marks so I believe they are original.

Try superstar, they're reasonably priced and have all sorts on offer.
I've tried sintered, kevlar and and resin and prefer sintered.
Check the rotors don't have 'resin only' etched on them
