Do prey tell who would they perceive would be above a spouse and dependents if no expression of wishes is filed? I cannot conceive they would choose someone else entirely.

You may not be able to conceive, but pension providers obviously can! I've seen fund values paid to the estate, to elderly parents and to siblings, even where the policyholder was married and/or had young children.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

If he didnt nominate someone it would first go to his spouse- did he have one? If no spouse it would go to his children.

It's never helpful to present something as a fact when it isn't (and I think you'll find it is 'pray', not 'prey'!). You are assuming he had a spouse or failing that, children - which isn't always the case - and even then they aren't the invariable choice. Have a read of some of the PO's determinations and you will see that decisions to choose someone other than the spouse/partner/child are not as rare as you seem to believe.

Yes, the spouse is alive as well as children, but unaware he had this policy.
