Driven mad, cant find my pension

Newbie looking for help!

I worked for Aol uk around 2000 and built up a decent pension. In various house moves i managed to lose my pension documents and now im having a nightmare tracing it. Things arent helped by aol getting taken over by carphone warehouse around 2006. God knows where my pension went from there. I have tried the pension tracing service but so far its proved useless. I have pretty much tried every pension fund associated with CW/talktalk so any help or leads would be great.

I honestly cant believe how difficult it is even with your national insurance details. Surely the tax office would have a record?

Why would they have a record if you don't...?

Are you searching on the exact name of your former employer, or just AOL UK? If the latter, you are making life very difficult for yourself because any search will throw up loads of companies who use aol as part of their website address. If you aren't sure, have a look at https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk to try and confirm the precise name.

if it was a contracted out scheme then HMRC will hold details.


Give them a ring and attempt to speak to the people who should be able to help - used to be "Class 1 caseworker" or similar.

TBH, as AOL is a US company cant expect tehm to have had a DB/contcted out sceme?

You can try searching with your NI number on https://www.pensionslink.com/ as well.

It won't have been, given the date of membership and the company's parentage.

Do you say this with knowledge of the former AOL UK's pension arrangements...? If not, I'm perplexed - lots of UK subsidiaries of foreign companies offered final salary pensions back in the day, and contracting out only ended in 2016 (obviously most private sector DB schemes had closed before then, but Dixons' own closed in 2002, so two years after the date provided by the OP).

Don't see why not - one of my sons works for the UK arm of a US company, and is still in their DB scheme (although it closed for new staff a number of years ago).

Well most wouldnt. I said I would be surprised. Color me surprised.

In any case I provided advice as where to find whatever pension there is.

But y'all can go on nit picking if you like.
