Self employed role - car use

Hello
I have been offered a job. They have said I would need to register as self employed.
The job involves visiting customers and it is paid per job, not per hour..
As it involves driving in an area up to an hour away from my home, i think the petrol costs will outweigh any money coming in!
If I register as self employed, would I be able to claim the milage back?
I would be using my own car.
Thank you

If minimum wage isn't guaranteed then it has to be on a self-employed basis.
Doesn't sound very attractive unless there is good commission or similar(?), or the rate per visit makes it worthwhile.
OP - see https://www.gov.uk/browse/business/setting-up for details of expenses which can and can't be set off against tax.0 -
How much do you get per job?
if employed on that basis then there are rules to calculate min wage for piece work and other non time based measures.
As a self employed person you can set the rate you accept for jobs to make sure you are getting enough to cover costs and time and the over heads of running your own business.0 -
Thanks for all of your replies.
I basically need to visit a building, complete a survey and I get paid a set amount £25 -£60.
I'm guessing it's self employed as there is no guarantee how much work there will be ..0 -

There is the additional running costs for the car too, not just petrol costs. Additional mileage means replacing tyres more often, additional servicing costs etc. You may find insurance goes up just because you are self-employed and will potentially be doing a lot of miles.
How long will a visit take on average, including travel time to and from?0 -

£60 for 2hrs +the job in my own car I would stay in bed at that rate.
Is this survey requiring any experience, skills or qualifications?
I think some mystery shopper jobs pay better that this.0 -

It's true that SOME do, but these are few and far between. Most MS jobs are paid at a pittance. However, as a self employed person you are always free to negotiate a rate.....Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0
