Travelling short on St Albans to SW London ticket

I found that if I were to travel from St Albans City to Richmond, the fare would be £13.30.

The fare from St Albans City to Kingston, which requires changing at Richmond, is £7.50. It is also £7.50 if you change at Richmond to go to Hampton, Teddington and other stations around there. Quite a difference.

Given the ticket requires changing at Richmond, would it be allowed to exit the station there? I know this is not really allowed with advance tickets.

These are all anytime day singles. There are no off peak singles or advance tickets available.

I am aware there is the option of splitting at Elstree & Borehamwood, but this is still £9.10 and requires getting off the train to validate an Oyster card.

Why must train fares be like this? Is there any point raising this with Thameslink/SWT as this seems ridiculous.
