Do Barclays get employer references for mortgages?

We've just been given the go-ahead with Barclays to move our mortgage to them, but I wondered if they would need to check with our employers that we earn/employment status /etc? We bank with Barclays too so they can see our income anyway, and have given them all the necessary paperwork/payslips. But I work in a school and had a hard enough job getting the council to send me my payslip for July so that we could apply for the mortgage, so getting any response from them might be difficult while on school holidays.

Anyone been in the same boat and have any idea?

We were ftb back in February and we got our mortgage through Barclays and they didn't ask for anything from our employers, just 3 months payslips :)
