Mortgage Payment Issue

Hi All,

I have a mortgage with the Bank of Ireland, however recently I had to apply via their paper process to change the bank account that my mortgage is paid from. I received confirmation from the bank on 5th August that the change had occurred, however on the 20th the payment was requested from my old account and defaulted. Is the bank at fault here or is it my problem?

Thanks in advance.

  • Have you contacted the bank to discuss? Why are you seeking to apportion blame here? A mistake has occurred and needs to be corrected - speaking directly to the lender would seem to me to be an appropriate way forward.

Have you paid the money now?

If you wait until the response you will find that they will automatically mark you down as late. So if they havent taken the money yet, call them up and make the payment.

It seems to have cleared but left me completely overdrawn as the account was empty.

Do you not have the funds to make the payment?

If they confirmed in writing then it seems it is their fault. However you should check the letter or original form to see if it says anything about what date the changes would be made from.

Bank of Ireland have some funny systems that let them do things one month but don’t actually start until the following month if it isn’t input by a certain date...

But you had the funds originally in your other account so you could just swop the money from the other account.
