Gutted: Help needed re council tax

I need some advice if anyone can help me out. I have received a statement in today from the council tax office saying I owe them money from 98/99 to the total of £1348.76. As far as I was concerned I had paid this off and any balance was to be paid by my ex. I have never heard anything since 2003 until today and I assumed he had paid it. I am still at the same address so there is no reason why there has been no contact. I could just cry as I was doing so well and now this. I called the council tax office and they are insisting it is still outstanding. Any ideas?

I know a few people this has happened to. I don't know why they leave it 4 years to chase! Do you have any receipts? I keep mine for several years just for instances like this. Can you speak to your ex?
Just re-reading your post, did you have arrears from 98/99 and were paying them up until 2003?

We had tons of arrears and I had paid off more than half. I told the council tax office to chase my ex for them as he was jointly liable and they have never got in touch since. This is so unfair.5 Year plan. April 2020 to June 2025- CC and mortgage free by time I'm 60

Hi MiT, I do not have any answers for you but just wanted to send you a (((hug))).
I hope you get this one sorted quickly xSuccessful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
Hi MiT,
Do you have any records of payments that you have sent them for this period? I know it is a long time ago but that would help, did you get payment receipts??
Also the request for full balance, has this been sent solely to you in your name or has it been sent addressed to both you and your ex? Was you ex on the bill at the time for the years in question?
Sorry for all the questions just trying to think of some solutions for you.
Keep smiling xx0 -

It is unfair I know. Its even worse as your ex won't have to pay any of it and why on earth did they leave it so long. When was the last time you made any payment?

Last paidmoney in 2003. Am going to call my union's law centre and get advice from them. There must be something I can do about this. I have some paperwork in my shredder ( was loking at old paperwork last night believe it or not) so I will rescue that and see if it enlightens me. I am going to hold off though as long as I possibly can before attending to it. I know it wont go away but I want to make dead sure that ex has been given a notice as well and is also being chased for it. I was hoping it might be statute barred but I doubt it.5 Year plan.
