How long does it usually take to receive cheque for tax rebate?

Hi I telephoned the HMRC regarding my tax rebate they told me I was due a refund and I should receive a cheque within 2 weeks, I would just like to know how long it usually takes , how long have people waited for theirs ie has it arrived in 3 days ? 5 days 10 days ?

  • Why did you ask for a cheque?

Was this a Self Assessment refund?

If not nowadays you can usually go onto your Personal Tax Account (on gov.uk) and put in your bank details and the money is in your account in a couple of days.

Might not be something everyone can do but think it applies to most refunds now.

I wouldnt expect a cheque for at least 14 days (anything quicker is a bonus) and obviously then you've got to allow time for getting it banked and cleared before you can draw on the funds I guess.

I t can take up to 7 days for the cheque to printed and packaged for posting. This is an automatic process so it depends on how many are in front of you in the queue as to when it is ready for posting.

It then enters the Royal Mail delivery system on a second class basis.

Delivery then depends on Royal Mail.
