In a first for London, Wembley Stadium is set to host The Race of Champions this December giving fans a unique opportunity to see the world's greatest drivers compete head-to-head.

1,800 tonnes of tarmac will transform the hallowed turf into a race track where 18 drivers - including seven-times Formula One champion, Michael Schumacher - will compete in a series of knockout heats to determine the "champion of champions."

The gladiatorial event is by invitation only and drivers from F1, World Rally, NASCAR, World Touring Cars and Le Mans are all on the guest list, guaranteeing closely-fought and dramatic racing, with spectators getting a bird's eye view of every instant of action across the entire race track from every seat. Drivers who are already confirmed include Honda F1's Jenson Button, Red Bull Racing's David Coulthard, World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx as well as the legendary Michael Schumacher.

The new Wembley Stadium will be transformed into an exciting, challenging parallel tarmac racetrack for the Race of Champions; here are a few key statistics.

• Construction will begin soon after the England-Croatia Euro 2008 qualifier on 21 November
• It will take a team of about 60 people five days to erect and three days to dismantle
• The asphalt circuit will be approximately 1 km
• Cars should reach speeds of up to 150kph
• Construction will require approximately:
  • 1,800 tonnes of asphalt
  • 2,200 tonnes of underlay
  • The positioning of a 100-tonne cross-over bridge
• A capacity crowd of 80,000 is expected to attend the Race of Champions at Wembley, slightly below Wembley's official capacity due to the front 10 rows being blocked off for safety
• The celebrated stadium guarantees a spectacular, panoramic view of the entire track from all seats
