Do I stand a chance of getting a mortgage?

Hi

I’m just wondering if I’m dreaming and need a dose of reality. I am seriously considering making the move to owning my own home after renting. I have a good job and my finances are now on track but that hasn’t always been the case. I’ve checked my credit files and all loans and credit card payments show as OK going back the full 6 years (I don’t have any outstanding debt now). However as recently as 2016 I show missing payments for JD Williams and Home Shopping Direct. Does anybody know if this will stop me getting a mortgage (I have a deposit saved)? I bank with NatWest and they had an option online to get an “agreement in principle”. I competed this as it said it wouldn’t leave a hard search on my credit file and it came back that I was fine (actually said I could have 3 times the amount I want). Does this mean anything? Do I actually stand a chance of getting a mortgage? Would I need a broker or are NatWest my best bet seeing as I’ve banked with them all my life? Thanks.

Natwest direct provide a soft search, which at times isn't worth the paper its written on.

However, based on the fact you have a couple of missed payments from 2016, I cannot see there being to much dramas with getting you a mortgage.

Its basically best to contract a broker to support you with this, as they will be aware of which lenders will be open to your circumstances
    I am a Mortgage Broker.

  • So having gone three credit files with a small toothed comb I realise as well as late payments the added charges put me over limit. Am I a lost cause?
