Artificial Sweeteners in Everything!

Anyone else more than a bit cross at having artificial sweeteners pushed at them as a healthier alternative to sugar? It's now almost impossible to buy a bottle of squash or a carbonated drink without sweetener in, what happened to freedom of choice for grown adults? And on what basis are these sweeteners safer than sugar? There's evidence to suggest the sweeteners mess with your metabolism big time. And they taste awful. Should a glass of blackcurrant squash or a can of fizzy lemonade free of these chemicals really be harder to purchase than alcohol? I would like to suggest to Jamie Oliver that he replaces all sugar in his recipes with bl**dy aspartame and see how that goes.

PS. Thank you to Sainsbury's for continuing with full sugar high juice blackcurrant squash!

Keep Smiling :)

I'm afraid this is what happens when you get politicians trying to win votes by listening to noisy pressure groups. The decisions they make almost always turn out to be wrong.

Oh I wish we had a proper conservative government rather than the exit nannies we have now.
But back to the sugar tax

That's the irony though, isn't it. People eating doughnuts and washing them down with diet coke :rotfl: One of my relatives lives off diet fizzy drinks (she doesn't drink tea or coffee) yet she'll happily eat (and feed the kids) pop tarts for breakfast.

Must say, OP, I'm not keen on chemical sweeteners either. According to one of the dentists on here xylitol can give you the ten-bob-bits if you have enough of it.

Most artificial sugars can. There are usually warnings on packets of stuff - particularly sugar free mints.

Artificial sweeteners are large molecules and are not absorbed by the gut - that's why they have no calorific value. BUT - if they stay in the gut the chemistry/physics of the situation means that water is drawn out of the body into the gut to keep fluid concentrations the same in the gut and in the body. All this water being drawn into the gut 'Aids digestive transit' as they say!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    That went down-market quickly. :o

There's a simple recipe for drinks without either added sugar or artificial sweeteners:-

    - Fruit Juice (or pulp)
    - Chilled Water

... that's it. Combine in whatever proportion you find most refreshing. If you believe that some sweeteners are "okay" (say Stevia), then you could use those in your own drink recipe.
  • Couldn't agree more. Nothing wrong with sugar. Or fat for that matter. In fact, we need both in our diet.

The problems occur when we have too much.

I never use artificial sweeteners, and avoid refined carbs (including sugar) as much as I possibly can. But I do have sugar in my tea and coffee.

I also avoid anything deemed to be 'low fat', and I have real butter on my (wholemeal) bread.

In fact, I try to avoid anything that isn't 'real' food. If it isn't obvious how it's made, I don't want to eat it.

    I'm 57, 5'8", and weigh 9st 4lb.
