Best place to buy an engangement ring.

I've used Gardiner's (correct spelling) in the past - I wouldn't see them as being much cheaper than the High Street outlets, but somehow their stock seemed to be of better quality.

They have a website - HERE - but no prices and only a small amount of their stock on display online.

Anything you like on the site just email them and they will email you the price and then just bring th printout and they will lwt you in. They are great and no probelms with anything you buy off them

You don't have to be a jeweller. I got a card but I can't remember for the life of me who gave it to me. Ask around your friends and work colleagues. I'll bet one of them has a card.

Its a romantic idea to propose when an expectant baby is on the cards.

I would hold off until you have got your bits and pieces for the baby......... then think about the ring and all the bling. Talk future spending through with the OH, funds, budget etc.

If the pair of you are already thinking down the line on long term commitment then all that can fall into place later on.

PS do all norn iron MSE members get an invite to the party?

Congratulations on baby & engagement. You should look at some auctions eg Ross's in Belfast or Bangor Auctions. There are always lovely rings in the actions for a fraction of the price and you can see them beforehand in the pre-sale viewing.

What is it about woman and the need to have a bit of bling. Given you have a family on the way your money could maybe be spent on something more useful. Why not pick up something cheap with a promise that it will be replaced later in life. I would almost be inclined o suggest getting a couple of cheap flights to New York or the Caribbean, having a holiday and buying a ring over there (jewellery is a very good price given the weakness of the dollar).

We bought the missus's engagement ring from Joseph reas and wedding rings from gardners. We didn't have the elusive card and just walked in and told them what we were after and one of the sales people sorted us out. The card is just one of their business cards so that next time you go back you've a name to tell the security guy and i presume they try to get the same person for you again. Best bit is they give you a valuation cert. for the retail value of the ring not the purchase price in case you ever need to claim.

do not go to argos, ernest jones argos etc. they are all mass produced rubbish. try antique shops for something a bit different or robinsons goldsmiths in bangor could make u something within ur budget. they are lovely. u would be surprised at the prices of commissioning a ring and u could get something relaly special. steensons are also good for this!

I would also highly recommend Joseph Rea, I bought my engagement ring around this time of year and they had 25-50 per cent off. Staff are helpful and friendly too.

Thanks for all your kind wishes and replies. All very good info there and I will be taking your advice. This Gardiners place seems definately worth a try. I have went to their site and registered and requested a quote which I will print out and then visit their shop.
