Change in Shifts?

Hi my boss is changing our Rota from sept. We do a 4 week rolling Rota. My problem us my son has a birthday weekend which I've planned things as it was my weekend off. The Rota now says I'm working, obviously not happy about this. My boss says either book as holiday or swap shifts, either of which I don't want to do and don't see why o should as things have been booked for weeks. Have any leg to stand on, where do I go from here? X

Short answer is no. Your boss, in extremis, can dictate when you take your holidays.

Is it really that difficult to swap shifts? If you use annual leave, you'll be off other days in new rota.

How is swapping shifts any different to when it was your weekend off?

The reason why you should is because your boss has told you they want you to work. Theyve offered it as holiday and will allow you to swap shifts. Take one of those options. The other option is to not show up, its generally frowned upon and can lead to disciplinaries/job loss. Your choice of course.
  • It's a lot of hassle to swap shifts and I didn't need to use holiday as it was my weekend off anyway. I work 24.5 hr shifts, so when I get days off they are important to me especially when I've planned a birthday weekend in advance. I know I probably haven't got a leg to stand on but it's just so annoying!
  • What does your contract say?

One of my previous jobs had contracted shifts, but in my contract it said if for the need of the business they wished to permanently change my contractual shifts they had to give 12 weeks notice.
  • Nothing in contract but in policies just states shifts may be changed to suit the business but with no time frame. That's that then I guess!

Sorry you do 24.5 hr shifts, or 24.5 hrs a week? I assume it's the latter. So you have plenty of time off.
