will i have a bad credit rating

i defaulted on a loan about 2 years ago, it never went to court, it just went to there solicitors im now on my last payment next week :rotfl:will this thing prevent me from getting finance in the future, have i now got a bad credit rating. we want to try and get a mortgage in the new year and i dont want this hanging over my head for ever.
