How to find a pension

I vaguely remember contracting out of Serps when I was 18. I also remember a few employers in my 20’s having company pension schemes that I paid into. But what I don’t have is any information about any of these pensions. I’ve tried using on-line searches but as the companies have stopped trading, or changed their name since I was there, I haven’t had any joy. I’m mostly concerned about the Serps though, and as I have no clue which provider I was signed up with I’ve not been able to progress my search. What will happen to the money if I’m unable to find it? Is there a way to find a pension when I hold no details at all?

Hoping someone can give me a clue.
Thank you.
