SSP - sick on non-working days

I thought the first 3 days of a PIW included non-working days but the gov.uk calculator says someone who was first ill on a Thursday and who doesn't normally work on Friday or Saturday doesn't qualify for any sick pay as he returned to work on Monday and was sick for only two working days. (Thursday and Sunday). [He does normally work to a set pattern but I believe his contact actually says his working days are Sunday to Saturday because it is a 24/7 working environment.]

Please don't suggest he simply wanted a long weekend - he turned up for work on the Thursday but was vomitting and had to go home part-way through his shift.

Was I wrong that non-working days count in a PIW and though the fourth day was a working day, he doesn't receive any sick pay?
