The way CC companies operate

Some quick background first. I had a heart attack last year and was off sick from work for quite a while. I religously contacted all CC companies and informed them, and asked for reduced payments (or preferably no payments !), only Egg were prepared to do this. Whilst off sick I did my best paying what I could, however Barclaycard continually bombarded me with telephone calls and letters, which didn't really help my "stress free" recovery period. In the end I changed my phone number, as I felt sick when the phone rang.

I'm now back at work, and managed to pay off the Barclaycard in full (due to a recent inheritance), after paying by debit card, I asked to close the account, only to be put through to the only person from Barclaycard who has ever not been rude, asking me to keep the card as they could give me cashback / reduced interest etc and telling me how much my custom was valued. I told her the story, and that I still wanted to close the account.

It appears to me, that for all the protestations that if you are in difficulty you should contact the companies as they will be sympathetic, this seems to be a load of nonsense, and the only time you are valued as a customer is when you don't owe anything at all.

Rant over, and good luck to everyone who has to deal with these horrible companies.

  • Sorry to hear you have gone through so much and good luck with the full recovery.

Sad thing is that these companies are only sales companies - that is all they are interested in, so when your chips are down and you can't pay - they see you as liability only.

Glad you could tell them to stuff the account, I have done it myself to several companies over the years and there is nothing better!!!!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
