I think it!!!8217;s the fact that our debts are so high that makes me embarrassed to discuss it. If we owed 5k, 10k or even 20k then I would feel differently I think. The reality is we owe well into the 60k!!!8217;s if I factor in my wife!!!8217;s 15k debt ( she does have the money to clear her 15k so I tend to not count that bit of our debt in our Totals).

I would hate to see people!!!8217;s shocked reactions to our debt level, it would really get to me. It!!!8217;s hard enough admitting it to myself! My wife is more level headed and is ok with it as we have a plan to clear it.

Yes you got yourself in debt, and yes there probably would be some shock at the amount, but if a friend told me they were in debt and actively had a plan to sort it out then I'd be impressed and a little more aware when making suggestions but that would be about it.

Not sure it changes anything but I've never been in debt so I don't think you have to have been there to be impressed with those dealing with it, and I don't personally think there should be any stigma attached.
  • Me, here that's about it. Hubby isn't interested at all. Has no idea what he owes/we owe, what the mortgage is.... I've tried but now the best way is for me to monitor it all.
Brother in law knows we are on a DMP as he came close to one to so gave him the information. Doesn't know the amount involved.
    Jan 18 Joint debts 35,213

    Mortgage Jan 18- 77224 May 25- just under 65k

June 25 Debts in my name only £5170. DH can't keep track...
  • When I was 6k in debt, I told my mum eventually, I broke it down to her bit by bit, wasn't easy though a real sense of shame and nothing to show for it at all.

Told a couple of close friends too, that's it. I had a job so managed to clear it.

Talking to some of my friends, even one of my cousin there is a lot of people in debt, you would never think. It seems to not bother them though, just bury heads in sand and they appear happy.

When I was in debt I felt awful and crap all the time!
