Do some research on the company (not just the job itself) - a lot of other applicants probably won't do this so this may well give you an advantage.

Yes, it's amazing how many people turn up at at interview knowing nothing about the employer. 20-30 years ago it was hard to find out much about a business but these days there is no excuse. Just spend 30 mins online to find out what their main products/services are, the company history, any major good news events (better not mention any bad news!), who their competitors are, any personal connections etc.

The other thing is to practice beforehand. All the better if you can do it with someone, but almost as good in front of a mirror.

I find that if I've heard the words coming out of my mouth beforehand, they are more likely to come out at the right time.

Of course, this hasn't stopped me committing interview suicide. "Why do you want to work for XYZ?" "Well, I need a school hours job and you're offering one." Fortunately I heard this come out and managed to retrieve it ... but I wish I'd practised more beforehand!

Did you stil get the job?

Surprisingly, I did: as I said, I heard myself say it and retrieved it somehow by saying that I supported their work (small charity) and was keen to help them.

Still there, nearly 20 years later ...
