Yes , it appears that's it's not an exact science and after removal there could be some reintroduction of menopausal symptoms that it had hitherto controlled eg night sweats.
I'd suggest to friends They enquire what's the absolute longest time it could be kept in without problems.
I had heard of women who had problems by not bothering to get it removed.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
No problem , I'm in close contact with my docs.0

I've been wondering what happens when it's removed for the last time.
I'm on my third one which has been in situ for 6 years. I'm 55 now and was told it should be removed after 7 years. How would I know if i have had the menopause? I'm concerned about having it removed in case I start having periods or menopausal symptoms.0 -

Im going through the menopause, Im 54 and had my last coil put in 4 years ago when I was already peri menopausal
This coil is to remain until Im 60, by which time Im expecting to have got by the night sweats, which is the only symptom of menopause I have had. Even though I haven't had periods for the 20 years I have used the mirena, I would still get ovulation pain which I haven't had the past year and recent blood tests confirm I am now menopausal
At 55 I would suggest if you haven't had any symptoms of being peri menopausal you pop in and ask for a blood test0 -
Just to update , and advise.
I think I'm getting a recurrence of menopausal symptoms, and I'd advise anyone else thinking of having the mirena coil removed after say, 5 years are up, to ask if it should remain in place for a little longer until the menopause is finished.
I wasn't warned my menopausal symptoms might return .0 -

My GP's comment was that after the length of time mine had been in place, it was unlikely to be having any effect on my hormones. So if I'd been troubled by menopausal symptoms at any time, then changing it for a new one might have been recommended, rather than just leaving the old one in place.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
But medical advice is essential.

my go offered no advice that it should remain in longer, and the one who originally mentioned it was nearcto it's removed val date ( about 5 years) didn't either.0 -
I had mine removed earlier this year. It was my second one.
For the first week after removal I bled quite heavily, but since then (April) I have had absolutely nothing
I am 57 and have had no further menopausal symptoms. Before I had my first one inserted about 11 years ago I was bleeding heavily and continuously, it was the last try before a hysterectomy (which I consequently avoided), and literally the night before I had it I had really bad night sweats. After having it inserted I had no more, and only very slight hot flushes (I was fairly early into the menopause).
I would recommend it for sure. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
