Flogging the odd thing that you already own on ebay or at a carboot is probably not classed as a business or get the HMRC on your back.

However If you are buying and selling - i.e. trading then it probably is a business and should be declared and of course they will be interested.

It's like saying people should not declare a change in circumstances to keep earning benefits because it's only £50 a week... You are basically cheating the taxpayer and those who do things correctly.

Likewise £150 a week or £7200 a year for a bit of weekend work would be of interest to the HMRC as it's a business and she is self employed as she is being paid to provide a service. Its not the same as flogging some old items you no longer need. For those earnings, for me its a no brainer to declare it and do it by the book - its not like it's going to cost you much to be 'legit'.

Im sure it is..thats why her employer pays the tax and insurance.

Cleaning she gets around £100 depending how many jobs she does.

Costs wise yes it wouldn't cost her really..my accountant does my self assessment and maximum is £60 for the year,i"ll see if she is still going in a few months and then if she is declare it.

Regards Ebay i was staggered to find whilst looking through accounts on Ebay page to find ive sold over £18,000 worth of stuff over last three years and im most certainly not a business, just bits and pieces i get and no longer want/need.

Amazing how quickly it builds up.

Im not sure if you are saying she is now employed to clean or whether she has a primary job and cleans as an additional way to earn money.

I presume this is a 2nd job for you to be told to register for SA, otherwise she is in employment and will have wage slips for the tax and NI contributions and this whole post has been a complete waste of time.

I'm not here to debate what you or your wife is doing - I was merely pointing out that earned income from a business should be declared and if you have told your MA that she isn't declaring it, they have a duty to report the tax evasion.

Offering cleaning services is a business and if your wife is not registered and it turns out she is not paying tax and NI on this money then she could be seen as trying to evade paying tax to HMRC.

Ebay is not the same thing but the following will explain

I just hope your disclosure to your mortgage adviser hasn't prompted anything which may turn the spotlight on you and your wife remains working under the radar. The below explains why they should report your wife.
