4 week certificate issued on the 9th of July expires on the 6th of August. I don't understand how you would think it would be the 3rd or the 8th.
Your employer might expect you back on the 6th or the 7th depending on how they interpret the period.

I presume OP is wondering if the weekend effects it maybe...? Otherwise a bit of an odd question.

I'd expect you back at work on the 7th.
    Union official.
    CiPD qualified.

Anything I post is solely MY OPINION. It never constitutes legal, financial or collective bargaining advice. I may tell you based on information given how I might approach an employment dispute case, but you should always seek advice from your own Union representative. If you don't have one, get one!

I could understand the question more if the cert had been for 28 days and the OP wondered if that was calendar or working days. Other than that the calculations of return to work date make little sense.

it must be something pretty serious if you know 5 days in advance that you'll be off still - will you be returning to the role?

Not trying to sound pessimistic, but just be aware that's a pretty long time, potentially long enough for them to be looking at termination.
