Resigned from job in July 2017 and didn't work rest of tax year - refund due?

Options
Hi

Due to resigning from my job I worked only the first 4 months and 1 week of the 2017/18 tax year. Have not worked since. Salary was 40k of which will only have been paid 4/12 of.

Will I be owed a tax refund? I was hoping for a tax refund in the post but have not received anything yet. Maybe it's too soon?

Many thanks for any info

Kaspar

Yes you will. 11k is tax free. The majority will be returned to you tor 4/12 months work at 40k.

There are very slow and you normally get a check in October time for the previous tax year ( from experience). I would simply call them up and clarity and they can send out the cheque then and there.

Yes. For the really old school amongst us it is :

    Personal Allowance 11500 x 8/12 = 7667

    Repay allowances at 20% = £1533.40

This is, of course, on the basis that you had no other taxable income including benefits after your employment ceased.

    Did you claim any benefits?

That may be a bit pessimistic - I received a letter telling me there was a refund waiting for me last month and was able to log onto my personal tax account and input my bank details to get in transferred there - it arrived within a couple of days.

Interesting - I received a cheque today from HMRC, albeit for an overpayment of Class 1 NIC. There was no explanation, no calculation just “we have calculated that you have overpaid”

Now I knew that this was due but how on earth would not anyone without a tax background have any idea?

    Thank you for the replies.

I didn't claim any benefits or have any other income.

I have signed up to this but can't see anything about income tax.

The three things I can see on it are NI details, Benefits (none applicable to me) and State Pension info.

If you dont currently have a live source of PAYE income (employment/pension) then you will not be able to see the PAYE section within the Personal Tax Account.

This is because there is currently nothing to feed into the system.

The automated process of reviewing all tax records runs from May to October, you will automatically receive a calculation if a repayment/underpayment of tax is due.

If you want to speed up the process you could write to HMRC (approx 4-6 weeks response time) or call them.

You will find the contact details here:
