On the immersion front I think I would keep the tank (adding insulation) and just get a good condensing boiler as and when unless you need the space the tank uses. I think the jury is out on which is more energy efficient in the long run and which boilers last longer etc etc but there would be costs in removing the tank and re-plumbing. Personally I prefer tank-fed hot water having had both but that is not a cost-based decision.
The diverter is nothing more than a clever switch sitting in the supply from distribution board to immersion heater. Power goes in on one side and can be used in boost or override mode if there is no sun but otherwise the output is fed by the proportionate circuitry that measures generation v use and pumps the excess to the output and onwards to the immersion heater.
I have a separate diverter mounted on a board which I use for oil-filled radiators in the shoulder months. It is fed by a wire with a 13A plug and has what is essentially an extension lead (3 in the case of the immerSUN) coming out of the output into which I can plug anything that is a resistive load. https://www.dropbox.com/s/jc8bsigzqbgfn18/immerSUN.jpg?dl=0
I also now have the kitchen underfloor heating wired into the main diverter, so mop up every Watt of generation in the non-summer months when we have the heating on.
I know I am a fan of diverters but if you have an immersion heater, underfloor heating and/or oil-filled radiators to take the chill off part of the house before you turn on the GCH then they are a good investment.
As I said, not using my boiler to heat water (and long runs of copper pipe between boiler and tank in summer) saves me about £100 on gas (actual figures based on pre and post install records) each year. Add in the UFH/rads and you probably add at least another £50.
Personal choice of course but hope this helps0
