in Cutting tax
Hope this is the right forum.
Long story short, I cant work so we are relying on my wifes wages.
My wifes a mobile hairdresser, area we live in is nothing like major city prices, plus about half her clients are elderly etc.
Last year her yearly income states:
Profit from self-employment £11,542
Total income received £11,542
minus personal allowance £11,00
Total income on which tax is due£542
Basic rate x 20% = £108.40
minus marriage allowance transfer £1,100 x 20% = £220,00
Total Tax due after allowances £0
Plus class 4 and class 2 national insurance, total due £458
She bought her car that year I believe that affected the profit figure too.
The end of the week is busiest, but the beginning of the week, usually isn't.
She's thinking of taking a job for 1 or 2 days a week to give herself a form of guaranteed income for Mondays/Tuesdays.
Mind you, most jobs around here are minimum wage.
I think she is making a mistake. Even though the profit after expenses etc is only £11,542, and while that works out at only £221 a week profit, that's after petrol, car repairs, car insurance, food at work, phone, hair products, and a second hand car etc etc etc.
Looking over the past 24 weeks on a Monday,
there has been five Mondays she has taken (before expenses) £11, £27, £31, £34 and £46.
six Mondays where she took £51, £51, £52 £52, £54, £59
five where she took £61, £62, £64, £64, £69
four where she took £72, £72, £75, £77
one she took £88
one she took £95
and two she took £100, £108
If she stopped working Monday and took a part time job instead, it will probably be min wage which is £7.83 an hour.
Presuming she works 9 - 17:30 with an hour unpaid for lunch, that's 7.5 hrs which equals £58.72.
If I times that by 24, her working Monday at min wage for 24 weeks equals £1409.40, where she would be paying for petrol to and from work etc.
Whereas over the past 24 (Mondays) weeks she took £1475
My reasoning for not being convinced is that while she had five Mondays where she took less than £50, usually she takes more.
OK it's before expenses, but she's talking about taking the job to have a guaranteed cash flow towards the mortgage, expenses don't tend to come out of Mondays takings, her Monday work is usually using run of the mill hairdressing consumables rather than expensive perms etc.
I'm worried that if she takes a day part time, she will end up with less money than she thinks, I don't know hoe it works of your both self employed and part time, how one day part time would effect her self employed tax, or how much NI etc she would pay in her part time day.
Plus of course she also get tips, not sure how that works, the accountant sorts that out, something like £1500 she pays tax on, all a bit confusing to me.
Does a day part time look like a good idea or not?
Many thanks

The way things are going, soon we are all going to be victims of something or other.
Who will we blame then?
