Changing my tax code has cost £1000

in Cutting tax
My mother and father applied for the marriage allowance as my mother doesn't pay tax and my after is a basic tax rate payer. Everything went swimmingly, had a £425 tax rebate, all seemed well. However, We had a letter off HMRC the other day stating my mother and father owe over £1000+ in back dated taxes over the last year. We sent off all the relevant p60's and info they wanted. We tried working it out ourselves and it doesn't ads up. We called the helpline and nobody could help us. There is no record of their rebate and my mother told me that the customer service adviser was giving tax advise ( which I thought was against the law?). Does anyone k ow how to resolve this or have you fallen into the same trap. Need help urgently as this matter is causing unnessessary stress.
Kind regards

You keep talking "they", tax is individual so who has received the letter, they would not get a joint letter. Who applied for the marriage allowance, M or F ? Why do they owe £1000, the letter would break it down.0

If you want help, you'll need to provide some figures (income and tax paid) and also what HMRC are demanding.0
