Why not contact the previous employer masquerading as a prospective employer to find out exactly what kind of reference is provided?0

That is exactly what I was thinking of doing! I just wasn't sure how you would go about it as I have never had to seek a reference for someone before.0

Although most employers will ask for a reference via letter, I have had agencies contact me by phone, could be worth a try, but be prepared for some to take a number to call you back on.0
