    Morning all

My mum used to make huge vats of stew - day 1 with dumplings, day 2 served with yorkies and day 3 with a crust top on it :T ... and i loved it...and still do :p .... infact stews etc are sooo much nicer a day or two after cooking
I never remember us wasting anything when we were little.. and i have finally got that mind set back again...
i haven't thrown anything away since we moved in here about 12 weeks ago, and i'm loving it....
I have also stopped eating in waste too, now i cook a recipe to serve 4 and freeze 2 - rather than dish it all up, so not only are our waist lines benefitting but so is our bank balance :T
And as for sell by/use by dates... i pretty much use my own judgement not what the lable says... the only thing im funny with is mushrooms (only as i got poisoned once) and seafood - im really careful with those..

The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • I use cooked left over vegetables in a veg curry. In fact I deliberately cook more veg than I need on a Sunday so that I can make this.

Don't think I have seen this site on here before, apologies if I've missed it.

There is a great bit to click on what you have that is passed it's best or about to go off and it comes up with recipes to use it.

It is a site to promote the use of food so that we don't throw away as much and has some great bits of information on it

Got a "floppy celery, wrinkly pepper, sweaty mushroom and tinned lentil"(!) soup on as we speak. That news story was not exactly revolutionary, but has given me a bit of a guilt trip in a week where I have been out of the house so much that most of the stuff in the fridge has been languishing. Even going to break out the emergency cupboard part-bake rolls to go with it, to stop me heading off to buy more junk...

    Hi Homework,

There's a current thread on using leftovers so I've added your link into it.

Sorry, I missed it, don't know how.

Now I have something to do with the bananas that all go off at the same time.

I don't have "leftovers". I start by knowing what I am going to do with everything I cook. And that starts with everything I buy.

I do tend to cook enough spuds for 4, but the other 3 portions I portion up and put in the fridge for the next 3 days, to be used as mash with sausages, or cheese/potato pie.

I've been religiously using spendingdiary.com to really find out where I spend my money and whereas I thought my weekly food bill was £10, it turns out to be only £7/week.

The ONLY food I throw out is about 1/4 of one long-life loaf of bread every 10-14 days. I buy long-life bread to reduce waste as it lasts longer.

    I have no freezer.

In fact, for this week I've only bought one pack of 8 sausages (£1 as half price in Somerfield this week) as I still have potatoes I bought 2 weeks ago. So it's sausage and mash twice, cheese/potato/onion pies twice, sausage sandwiches twice, cheese sandwiches three times this week, which is most of the week taken care of already. Then by next Wednesday I will just need to buy, probably, £1.50 of mince (another Somerfield half price bargain) and a tin of tomatoes to make a chilli for the next 4 days. This week's food will probably be coming in under £5 in total, pricing in the stuff I've got but will use

Brilliant! I'll try that, but with a mash top on day 3. Pastry sounds a bit too long-winded for me :)
