sourcing off grid gel batts

Options
Does anyone have any advice regarding sources of gel batteries for delivery to Greece and best cost?

I have an acquaintance in Greece who wishes to extend off grid storage capability, can source batts in Greece (they came from uk via Athens but maybe made in far east!). I wonder if there would be a more cost effective route to buy them!

Required are two 12v 100Ah deep cycle batts to match existing ones.

Batteries in the UK are cheaper, on the whole but then there is a delivery cost that is significant.

Any ideas, such as delivery direct from far east?

Find a yachtie who needs a bit of ballast in their boat and persuade them to bring them with a promise of a free mooring and taverna meal. Bit late for this season, I reckon..

Sorry, but you did ask! How much would the shipping be? Sometimes you can find man and van type operations who have spare capacity on continental runs, although I've only used them as far as Italy.

Actually, Italian prices aren't too bad - maybe somebody could bring them over from Brindisi on the ferry?

I had some advice on buying batts from an off-gridder in Ireland. I was simply researching the cost of off-grid kWh's (PV + storage) for thread discussions, not for any personal decision.

He always seemed to refer to quotes/invoices from Poland, as UK/Ireland prices were higher.

I know this doesn't really help, but you seemed to want any advice/information.

Perhaps a deep dive into Google might find some comparison sites????

Thanks both. Those are actually very useful replies! A bit of lateral thinking does help rather than just the obvious first thoughts!

......and as an afterthought, Martyn, can you point me to the bits of your threads regarding off grid storage that I assume is somewhere in one of your most useful threads?

The Greek connection is regarding a property that is totally off grid. Indtalling solar (PV in addition to the common thermal generation used in that country) was very cost effective compared to paying for grid supply but the owner underestimated the amount of storage that could be used and is necessary and thus wishes to expand capability. He has loads of generation from a minumum number of panels!

From a personal persective (off topic!!) I too am waiting for cheaper storage for my surplus generation, optimistic that we will get there in a few years time. I wonder if, like my thoughts with cars, if hydrogen storage might not be best but that technology development does not seem to be progressing very fast!

Hiya. I think it's in this thread somewhere, if I recall correctly.

The Great Solar Shift (warm places edition)

Basically I was trying to correct some of the misinformation being posted over many threads by one poster (now posting on G&E under a second name) about the costs of going off-grid, especially in Australia, or for locations not yet connected to the mains and facing tens of thousands in costs for connecting.

The off-gridder had previously provided info on very large lead acid battery banks, say 40kWh's+, and how if you paid the right price and deducted the scrap value, then with proper care they could run at close to 2p/kWh in storage costs.

Fingers crossed, lithium prices will continue to fall, and the higher DoD and cycles will also head for those sort of figures over time. I think the Powerwall II is about 8p-10p/kWh, but if life expectancy proves to be twice that of the warranty period, and the cost halves over time, then that gives us something closer to 2p-3p/kWh.

Thanks for pointer and info M. Will have a read.

Gefnew that Greek site could be useful as I can already see a cost saving!
