Evil Jacobs. They'll probably kill me for the final £12.75!

That's just about how I was treated by the young girl I spoke to yesterday.

I asked them to postpone my final payment of £12.75 (a debt which I have been paying off regularly at £10 per month since Christmas.) because I have passed my health assessment and have to go on Universal Credit, which as we know results in weeks without money (8-10 weeks in Lincolnshire!).

I was instructed by the CAB to ask for a 28 day hold on my final payment. Jacobs were insistent that I paid NOW otherwise they would be sending the bailiffs round. I have already had vicious threats from them at Christmas. They lie. They make you fear for your life. I just wish I had recorded the phone conversation I had with the collector, actually it was a heated ROW, They are pure evil as far as I am concerned.

When I told the girl that I had no money AT ALL, she just kept insisting on an immediate payment or action would be taken. My final payment isn't even due until 12th August.

How can they sleep at night? Something tells me that they are trained to believe that all people who owe money are nothing but scum. Well, it's they who are the real scum.

    Hi,

This is exactly why you should not phone these people.

Simply put your instructions in a letter and send it to them.

No hassle, no stress, and removes the opportunity for any conflict.

Always keep these things in writing only.

You don't say what debt this is but Jacobs are bailiffs and there are two sets of fees: £75 for the 'compliance' stage, which kicks in as soon as they send a letter, and £235 for the 'enforcement' stage, which is activated if you have failed to make or keep an agreement at compliance stage, and they have visited.

If both sets of fees are already in there, and this is NOT for a criminal fine in the Magistrates Court then previous advice is good.

However, if that isn't the case then there are logical reasons why you should make that final payment by 12 August
  • Sorry I haven't written back before now. I am so low I have little enthusiasm for anything these days. It's also becoming very painful to type.

Pathetic! I don't know what I was thinking with that title about Jacobs will kill me. I suppose it just shows how messed up I am.

sourcrates: You are absolutely right of course, but you won't believe what I am going to say. The debt management charity who were helping me, failed to help and actually apsekd me to take on some of my creditors myself!!! I was not given any advice on how to do this. Over a year of wasting my time. So I have now gone to the CAB. I wish I'd gone to CAP but the wait was too long. Also, I was reluctant to use the CAB as I was given incorrect information last year by a long-standing CAB advisor who should have known better. It all felt deliberate. I have now complained.

Jacobs are regarded as the worst company of their kind. They use devious tactics which are well documented on the internet. The CAB are now writing to them on my behalf.

The Jacobs debt was £82.75 worth of unpaid concil tax which my ex didn't pay while I had temporarily moved out of the property. £82 eemes such a small amount to involve bailiffs, etc. I spoke to the council and they agreed, but I had to contact Jacobs and set up a £10 per month payment. It's my last payment of £12.75 next month.

I got an upfront payment of UC. The problem is, it's a loan which I will have to pay back over the next year.

Two things I need to know/do:

I have asked for a Mandatory Reconsideration of my ESA. But I am now receiving UC. I have been told that the UC will override any ESA appeal and I shouldn't have proceeded with the UC claim. Is this right? Nobody at the UC offices seemed to know. I smell a rat.

In the event of a successful DHP request, do they backpay any council tax and housing benefit shortfalls?

    Thanks.

    John.
