Payment for training

I am a 64 year old man. I recently retired and moved to the West Country.

Having got our new house straight a GP friend mentioned that our local Out of Hours health service was looking for driver/receptionists. I was a little bored and not using all my tax allowance so I went for it. Good fun, minimum of 10 hours per month and I get to choose when I work; perfect, even if only minimum wage.

Soon after I started, just over a year ago, I was asked to do a load of online training, very generic. They got me to do this at home since I worked so rarely and paid me for the time allotted.

Next that happens is the main contract holder loses the contract and it's awarded to a new organisation - having said that 99% of the operational staff stayed, just a new CEO.

Our contracts our TUPED over.

Anyway, and here's the nub, the new organisation wants us to redo all our generic, online training. It's little different but naturally it needs to be done so I do it all again.

A couple of months pass but the remuneration for the training never shows up in my pay.

I query this with my line manager who tells me that I should have done it at work and I wont get paid for it.

Some full time folk had been doing the training at work but I couldn't as I didn't have the time. In fact I got a general email on 20 March informing us that we must all get all the training completed by 31 March.

I can understand their approach for full time staff; provided that they are given sufficient notice BUT to expect me, who only works 10 hours per month to be able to fit in 10 hours of training within an already demanding 10 hour shift is ludicrous. We're typically so busy that we're often not even able to take statutory breaks.

I'm planning to respond along these lines but, since I'm obviously personally interested, I thought I'd run it by you guys to get a balanced view.

Am I being unreasonable?

I certainly don't think you are being unreasonable. If full time staff do the training in work time there is no reason for it do be different for part timers.
