Tax code not changed after company car returned

Options
I am hoping someone can help.
I had a job that for 10 years came with a company car. Last November my car was returned as my role no longer needed it, so I contacted HMRC in the hope my tax code would be changed and I would receive a little more in my pay packet - they said my tax code would not change until April and that I would not be due a refund as payments for the car were pro-rata. I was without the car for 5 months of the last tax year but my tax code stayed the same 917L .
My tax code did change in April.
Does this sound correct or should i recontact them again?
Any help or advice greatly received

what did your P11D show re the car?

If your tax code was upto date and included a full years company car benefit, which was entirely possible given you'd had the car for some time, then it should have been possible to amend your code.

The car would have had to stay in the code but the amount of the car benefit in kind could have been reduced to take account of the revised benefit value for the period from 6 April to whenever the car stopped being available.

Sadly there is nothing you can now to change this so your best option is to provide us with a breakdown of how your tax code of 917L was made up, your P60 details for 2017:18 and the details from your 2017:18 P11D.

Complete an online self assessment for the last tax year. They will then refund any tax overpaid.
