Letter from Halifax re Mortgage

So it has come up that incorrect interest has been charged, probably pence, but rather than pay staffing costs to work out the amount on each one, a blanket £20 that both covers it and offers compensation for any inconvenience caused makes business sense. They have probably sent it to all where there may be an error, because its more cost effective than checking if the difference was greater than 0p.
I wonder why people think they aim to dupe or fob you off. The difference will be no where near £20.0 -
And then people ring up querying the pennies and wanting a breakdown and causing a lot of extra work anyway!
I get that people are suspicious of Banks but common sense needed sometimes - sending people openly £20 is not sweeping under the carpet, its the opposite.
I bet the project team sigh when the calls start. The automatic belief that if they're paying £20 they must be hiding something and actually owe me more!!0 -
Hey all, sorry for the late reply to this theres been a fair bit of turmoil in the house recently. Thanks for all the feedback.
Believe me when I say, I wasn't thinking hmm how much can I get here, it's more a case that the letter was soon vague.
I did say to the chap on the phone that it was more curiosity than anything.
I think a lesson for the banks is just be more clear in the letters in the first place, then I wouldn't have called for the information, which then wastes their time and more postage etc.
Interesting to see others have had similar scenarios though, I guess it would have been washed through my mortgage statement if the mortgage account was still open, hence the letter and cheque in the first place.
Bottom line is, I banked the cheque....and the wife has already spent it.0
