anyone here had a referral to dental hospital?

Daft question, perhaps, but if you get referred to a dental hospital, is it a department within a normal hospital or is it a separate thing? Maybe it depends on the area?

Got a recent referral to a dental hospital. Dentist couldn't tell me where I would be going, - something about it going into the NHS referral system and she didn't know where or which hospital it would be (??) so I tried googling dental hospital + my area, and not much came up apart from the oral and maxillofacial dept at my local general hospital. Maybe it's this?

Just hoping I don't have to travel too far..

It may be a Dental hospital, there are not many of them about , it may be a department in a local hospital , it may be in a community dental centre.

It depends on what is local , what the problem is that you are referred for and local funding.

Eg for a wisdom tooth extraction it may very well be a department in a local hospital , for complicated dental treatment it will more likely be a Dental hospital.

Unfortunately the criteria for Dental referrals is very tough and many are bounced back from the NHS referral system for a multitude of reasons , so be prepared just in case.

Thanks for the quick reply! She's x-rayed a tooth that needs to come out. Difficult extraction, think there's a tooth next to it that's at an angle, and she doesn't want to do it herself.

Meanwhile my jaw and ear are throbbing. Not 100% sure that it's the tooth that's causing it, but it could be. I'm wondering if it's sinus trouble, myself, but that's going to complicate things even more I suppose.. :(

If it gets refused, I wonder what happens next.. hopefully they will at least let me know, as I'm sitting here waiting for a letter from the dental hospital for an appointment.

Tooth extraction is an easy referral. That will probably be at your local oral surgery department in a general hospital. However some areas have funded "second tier" services ie oral surgery specialists in local practices or local community dental services.

Referrals can be refused for silly reasons ie missing information, wrong box ticked and normally that is sorted out by the surgery.

Waiting times can vary from a few weeks to over 18 months depending on where you are.

Thanks, yes it was tricky trying to get an xray of it, as it's at the back of the mouth, and she did say she hoped they'd accept it.. :undecided

I was referred to a dental hospital-not part of the local hospital.
  • It's the local hospital apparently. Dental clinic refused to do it as it's too close to the nerve or something.. So now I'm waiting for an NHS letter to arrive.

  • When i go there very first time then I was very impressed the service i got. A very anxious patient and dental nurse together put me at ease with the procedure they were going to do with the removal of my wisdom tooth. I never felt a thing and also a lovely bedside manner i felt like skipping out after my tooth had been taken out..

    What are you on about?

Anyway, still waiting for letter to arrive. Good old NHS, can't beat em

Been a few strange posts from that one. Wouldn't surprise me if we have some spam from an East European implant clinic soon! ;)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I had one like that. It went round the NHS referral system but it was quicker for my dentist to refer me to a friend of his in another practice who could do the job.

When I was referred up to the hospital from the dentist (slight difference in that it was an emergency and straight in rather than a waiting list) she sent the xray she'd done in and they did another one - but it was done with me standing and from all angles rather than as they do in the dentist
