What would you do if your local ATM gave no cash out????

Hi everyone.
Missed you all loads over the weekend. I did manage to do O/T at double pay:p so that stopped me falling off the wagon and spending money :j
I also had the weirdest experience on friday evening. I queued at HSBC ATM to get some cash out to pay for a few bits in the local shop. The machine eventually decided to spit out my debit card and post a "service unavailable" message. I thought it was just this machine until the the second HSBC machine did the same to the guy next to me.
running down the road to Halifax - the machine was also out of service.
Now there are 7 cash (6 different banks/Building societies) machines in my small town all within 100 meters or so and every single one was "service unavailable".
Obviously they are all linked probably by the same system. I carry cards as i tend to blow cash but I realised then that i have not a penny on me or any access to emergency cash.
it made me realise that i have no contingency cash stashed at home at all....do you?

I have to admit that I do have an emergency cash stash at home but only because my sister put it there in the sugar dish because she always insists that you should always be prepared for every eventuality but she did make me promise not to spend it on anything but an absolute emergency.:o

Normally I don't keep cash in the house, but since being on here, I've got collections in jars of change & £2 coins - about £20 in total - which I wouldn't dip into in normal circumstances, but would certainly tide me over if things got desperate and I had no access to cash.
A couple of months ago on a Saturday morning, all Nat West computers went down, so you couldn't get cash out of any machine (even if it was a different bank's ATM) and no shops would accept their debit cards. Fortunately the bank was open & I could get money from the counter, but if it had been closed, I would have been in trouble & without food & only a small amount of diesel in the car[STRIKE]DFW Nerd number 729[/STRIKE]Debt Free & Proud0 -
I have £30.00 emergency cash at home, its in loose change less than 10p so I would have to be desperate to change it.Tallyhoh! Stopped Smoking October 2000. Saved £29382.50 so far!0

There's only one cashpoint anywhere near me, but on the odd occasion it's 'died' my local pub lets us use their debit/credit card machine for an extra 50p!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

Hi All
Interesting to see what you all do.
I've just had to use my "emergency" money. Just had my debit card declined in a shop  . I was mortified to say the least, especially as I had just been to my bank to pay the cash in about 20 mins earlier. I was only buying top up food for a special halloween tea/sweets for trick or treat etc, but oh, the shame of it!
So, I used my "emergency £10" thats in one side of my purse and my "emergency-emergency £5" that's hidden in the middle of my purse - thank god I was prepared for an emergency-emergency!
Rang bank, apparently problems with their systems
- at least it's not with my account. What's the chances of getting that in writing so I can show my face again in the shop
?!!
Ahh well, better make sure I put the emergency funds back now.
Considering the attack that was made on this site - do you think it's possible that someone could attack the banks' systems on a grand scale - what would we all do then?!
Have a good afternoon everyone.

sory to hear of your embarrasment sunshine, had that happen to me in post office a few weeks ago when i knew i had the money there for it, next time i went in i made a point of saying to the cashier "that was so strange the other day, do you know i went to the bank and it was fine" she looked at me rather strangely but hey it made me feel better!!!!debt @05/11/11 £12210.63!! slowly chipping away!!:heart2:impossible is nothing.:heart2:0
