Meter reader can't do their job properly

Today I had my bill from EDF which was wrong. I checked my meter reading and it was taken by a meter reader. They added both my day and night readings for my day figure then put a 9 instead e of 5 for the night. It should have been 5xxx but recorded it as 9xxx.

This made my account £1350 in debit and my direct debit to £265 a month. I live alone and don't have gas. I was paying £33 a month.

A live chat got my updated figures and only about £34 in debit and paying £34 a month.

I did mention that the meter reader can't read my meter. One of the displays does show the combined day and night figures and if someone who is elderly would become seriously worried and ill (the shock could cause a heart attack). The person on EDF live chat was brilliant and got a complaint issued. As how many other people has the MR given completely wrong figures?

From now on I will be taking a reading myself within the first three days of each month.

I do have a smart meter but that was installed with EON. Have tried to get it changed but it requires me at home - appointments have been when I'm out working or have plans. No point now as my deal ends 31/8.

I normally get an email from EDF asking for a reading but not received one

I suspect that for every meter misread by the meter reader, a hundred meters are misread when customers submit their readings(some inaccurate on purpose!)

I work for EDF meter reading. Not sure if you are mistaken but on Eco 7 meters we only ever take the day and night totals not the reading which totals the two.
When a reading is so far out the auto billing systems will reject these readings and issue an estimate
Mistakes are easily done when customers stick all sorts of rubbish in front of the meters. We are not Giraffes ! Most times I have to use an extending mirror because of the stupidity of occupiers piling stuff all over the meters so more chances of mis reads..Thats my defence anyway.
If you have an ex Eon smart meter it may well be the worlds worst meter, the Secure Liberty meter. These meters are designed for Indian small businesses and because they are so cheap to buy, the cheapjack suppliers are turning to these to save a few quid. They are so awkward to read when they are placed in inaccessible places that no wonder lots of mistakes will be made. The general public will be struggling much of the time with its stupid little keyboard and spurious extra readings that this business meter displays (eg. Kvarh as well as kwh )
Simple meter reading is getting harder since good old analogue meters were dumped for cheap digital meters. That`s progress ?
