Gym charges active membership after I left

Hello,
A bit of convoluted story:
I was a corporate member of DW Fitness First for 2 years. In the end of last year I changed job. Since I was also about to move out, I went to the gym and asked to pay for only 2 months after the end of my corporate membership. The employee at the branch (Shepherds Bush) agreed and I have paid £130 for 2 months (not 1 year or 6 month membership). I wasn't handled any paperwork.
In the third month I moved out and have been using a local gym ever since. However I have just received, redirected from my previous address, a mail from a debit collecting agency stating I am over £260 in arrears. I have called fitness first and they claim that I have never cancelled the membership, it is still active and I cannot cancel it until I clear my debt.
So I understand that they (1) renewed my membership without my consent and (2) create a sense of urgency into paying without questioning since I will incur in more debt as I remain an unwilling member.
The fact I don't have paperwork aggravates the situation for me since I don't know the terms and conditions. However are (1) and (2) common practices?
I would be very grateful for any advices.
Thanks
Sandro
