A friend of mine sent an email containing critical information and documents about a particular person to a person who wasn't that person.

You will need to give an explanation as to what you did?
How long have you worked there?
What are the policies/procedures where you work, have they been breached?
Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time

Was this within the company, ie another member of staff or to an external email.

  • I believe it was to an unrelated 3rd party

If your friend did it today then he needs to speak to his manager ASAP so that the IPO can be informed. If he leaves it a few days then i suspect he will lose his job. If he hides it and is found out because the recipient may be aware of GDPR and what happened, then it goes without saying, he has lost his job.

Doesnt matter at all, under GDPR, if that person within the company has no reason to have that information but they recieve it, it is a breech.
