Last time we applied for a mortgage the Very first thing are broker did was to check are credit file with the 3 credit sites.
Made sure we were on the electoral roll and All our credit commitments.
This was before we applied to any mortgage lenders
You have been turned down which may effect your credit score even after BG get there act together
My Broker asked for all the credit files before full applications and DIP months in advance"It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

Ok, I wasn't sure where to put it as the mortgage search was what flagged it up. Can I move it or do I need to repost in that forum?
Have you raised an official complaint yet? That should help speed things up. Do you know which legal entity is the supplier? If it is British Gas Services Limited, then it is regulated by the PRA and the FCA, therefore complaints could potentially be referred to the FOS.
Doing this will not only speed up the urgency but you should be entitled to some compensation for your situation.0 -
....
It turns out that a company who shall remain nameless, but who for arguments sake will be known as British Gas, opened an account in Autumn 2017 without my permission in my name for a property I left five years ago. Since then, they've been merrily marking defaults every month against my credit record for failed payments.
Identity fraud.
Someone at that property has come across some correspondence in your name and opened a BG account in that name. I can't think of any reason why BG would want to not get paid for the energy supplied. They are also the victims of this fraud.... After maintaining a very good credit score for decades, it seems a third party can secretly balls it up and potentially ruin the most significant financial decision you'll ever make. I presume that if I hadn't applied for a mortgage, the arrears would continue to increase up until the bailiffs or a CCJ arrived at my current address....
I'm not sure how you can be so sure you have maintained a "a very good credit score for decades" unless you were checking your credit record, in which case it would not have been a secret.....Can anyone advise on what, if any, channels I have to take it further?...
Persuade BG that this is indeed a case of identity fraud.
Next time choose a different broker.

I check my credit score once a year or so. I'm not in the habit of applying for credit and so it's not something I've ever felt the need to check more often. I know that it was fine, and has been for years. The account was opened in the last twelve months and so hadn't been picked up. It doens't smell like identity theft. I've had no other issues with any other companies, just this one account. I doubt there's any more to it than faults with BGs own system.0
