Companies generally won't hold 2014 or 2015 stock new as they'll want shot of the old stock so they'll clear out of the previous year stock when the new models come out and mostly sell the current year stock. The best time to look is when the new model year comes in and the bike shops are clearing out the previous models, the new Trek 2019 models have just been announced so it's worth keeping an eye on some of the big stores like Evans (smaller stores won't tend to hold much stock) to see if they discount bikes.
The main Trek site will also sell reduced bikes when the new models come in. It's a bit of a crapshoot though as they tend not to have popular bikes or sizes.
If you're wanting a decent hardtail then it's worth checking for ex-hire bikes as they can be a reliable spec (since they need to last well), when I started with mountain biking I bought an ex-demo Trek hardtail reasonably cheap that had been well looked after.
It is also worth checking Gumtree, pinkbike and similar as there's quite a few people who buy a bike on cycle to work then end up never using and sell a great bike for not much money.0 -

One piece of advice: don't buy it without trying it for size first otherwise you may hate it and decide you hate cycling. That's why a local bike shop whilst maybe more expensive (but do haggle) is well worth a visit.
Or as mentioned a used bike but try it first. Put a wanted ad on Gumtree.0 -
Agree with all the above replies. I would emphasise how important it is to try before you buy. Sizes, frame shapes, Q factor, crank length and levels of adjustment vary enormously. That said,if you haven't cycled for years, you may be more accommodating.0

Bikes drop in price when the new ones come out. (So in the next couple of months) They drop again a few months later - possibly Februaryish, but there will be much less choice.
3 year old new ones generally aren't such good value, in road bikes anyway.0 -

Paul's Cycles also accept cycle to work vouchers for many bikes
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
