Getting less Salary than advertised?

Hi Folks,

Wanted to some advice on my recent job with a small charity voluntary organisation, which advertised several jobs and one of them I applied.

The manager or the 'owner of the charity' gave me a contract, which is lower than what he advertised, when I questioned he brushed it off and said he'll review it in the future, but isn't that unlawful?

The 'manager' is a weird guy with a bad temper and seeking always to find faults and constant criticism of me, even though I'm quite experienced than him and the other 2 staff, are university leavers, as they tolerate his outbursts.

It's a very small team of 3 staff and somehow I think there is something dodgy going on, as he seems to be the one man organisation with 1 trustee who is very young.

Salaries can be negotiated up and down. It!!!8217;s now unlawful. You ether work for the salary he!!!8217;s offering or you tell him to foxtrot Oscar and find a workplace that won!!!8217;t mess you about

Did you not notice the salary discrepancy in the offer letter before you started?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I've often found the actual salary when offered is different. Recently I was offered a job and when the offer letter came it was more than advertised. I was hiring recently and there was a bracket. The actual salary depending on experience. My husband was hired on lower than advertised but quickly given a payrise. It's not unusual for salaries to change.
It would be wrong if you got paid less than the contract states but if the contract states x it's in the open and for you to decide if it's acceptable to you. it's not illegal. Salary aside it doesn't sound like a nice place to be.

It's not unlawful but if you don't like the salary, go back and complain (I'm guessing you didn't get the written contract until after you'd started?).
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

That's right, I got the written contract after a day in the job.

Now as the probation is period approaching, he sent me an email, in which he further states that the salary is going to be reviewed by the 'Trustees' as I know it'll be a discussion by him and the young Trustee girl and the salary could be even be reduced.

At similar time as me joining, there other two staff joined, and they also had lower salary than advertised. I think there is something dodgy going on with this organisation, as the manager is a one man organisation, and there is no other trustee other than this young girl. He applies for funding, hires staff, by himself, as during the interview there were no other personal apart from him and its gets funding from the Natintional lottery.

If you have any evidence to support your feeling that something dodgy is going on, report them to the Charities Commission.

Have a look at the accounts and other documents, such as the constitution, on the Charities Commission website. It might give you an idea as to what is going on and what they're supposed to be doing.

So put a blooming good case forward for a rise. Least they seem bothered and are mindfully aware so see the positive - you will get the chance to air your concern to those involved direct in the situation.

Are there any differences in hours which could be contributing to the unexpected wage difference??

Slightly differently - fairly recently I got a bit uptight about seeing what I thought was an under salary in a job advertisement - it turned out there were 2 roles one for a regular full timer and another for an trainee - just the trainee salary had been made public. :o

In a fixed term contract, I do have a worry if offered another role at same company with salary as less, what happens though I intend to appeal any sanction by JCP for giving up any lesser paid job that puts me in a worse situation 6 months on I can see it happening... (and could let you know how I get on). (Considering I've just done X months earning no commission or bonus to speak of so sometimes it is a case of accepting until review when you can fight your corner or choosing to vote with the feet) though we have a Union where I am for the permanent staff and they have just celebrated a % pay rise for the members that are permanent. Could you join a Union covering the charity sector if you are permanent? (It makes sense if and wherever possible nowadays if you are eligible to join) I would say know your maket rate worth but again no idea if this actually applies to charities.

Yes, I'll be doing some digging into his private (charity) enterprise. My interview for the job, lasted 10 minutes, I thought it was very strange and thought maybe the job was not legitimate and did not take him seriously as he seemed a bit 'crazy'. I then looked at his website which had photos from elsewhere, I mean photos of not real people but copied from the internet or of models.

There were several times, when I thought I can't work with him, as he was micro managing, very rude, does not understand the work involve and condescending. In fact he is not fit to have a paid role. Previous 2 staff left after 3/4 months. He treat this charity as was own private business and he never explained his position and how much he gets.
